Star Trek Movie Poster (2009)

I adore this Star Trek poster. It’s for the movie, which is coming in 2009. This is a fan-made version, which I actually prefer to the “official” version. I really hope this movie helps to revive the franchise, which has suffered in recent years.

If you are looking for movie-related information, check out this fansite, which has more information than the “official” site at the moment.

UPDATE:  Added the second fan-made poster. [08/31/08]

Miracle At Santa Anna

I’m curious about Miracle at Santa Anna, the Spike Lee movie in theatres September 26.  The movie tells the story of four African-American Buffalo Soldiers from the all black 92nd Infantry Division, during the Italian Campaign in World War II.  The soldiers get trapped near a small Tuscan village after one of them risks his life to save an Italian boy.

The story is based in part on the August 1944 Sant’Anna di Stazzema massacre, where 560 villagers and refugees were murdered by retreating SS forces.

I’m interested in this movie because I saw the trailer when I went to see the Dark Knight.  I read the book and enjoyed it as well.  I’m curious as to how the story will play out onscreen.  Also, it’s not often a war movie comes along that focuses on the African-American troops.  I’m not a big fan of war movies in general (the only war-themed films I ever liked  are Tora, Tora, Tora, Glory, and Saving Private Ryan), but I will definitely check this one out.

My inner fangirl is heartbroken…

My inner fangirl is heartbroken…

Saturday morning, when I came into work, the first thing I heard out of my co-workers was that Bernie Mac, of my favorite comics, had died.  Today, I get a phone call from a friend saying Issac Hayes, the man who created what may very well be the best soundtrack of all time, Shaft, has died.

My sympathies go out to the families and to the fellow fans.  We are losing the great ones, people.

Webcomic: Bayou

I’ll admit, I don’t know much about the world of comic books. As a child, I read a few second-hand Justice Leagues, but nothing kept my interest. I was more into the young adult books, like The Adventures Of Tom Sawyer, Anne Of Green Gables, & Roll Of Thunder, Hear My Cry.

When comics hit the web, I still didn’t think there was anything that would appeal to me. I was wrong! I came across Bayou, written by Jeremy Love & Patrick Morgan. It is one of the star features at Zuda Comics, a division of DC Comics. Bayou is set during the 1930’s South, and centers around an African-American girl named Lee Wagstaff. Lee is a strong, smart, and outspoken girl who is devoted to her father. But life is far from carefree. Not only must she deal with life in a racially oppressive town, she must journey though a strange and nightmarish world in order to save those she loves.
The artwork is fantastic, and the story line is haunting. It’s not for the children, though. The series is not yet complete, check for updates often. I hope Bayou is eventually produced in print form. But if it isn’t, I’ve been printing out the panels and saving them in a binder. Between this and the Batman fanfic (I print out a few chapters at a time and read them at work on breaks), I’m going to blow out my inkjet printer.

Dr. Who BBC Website

I’m a fan of the new Dr. Who series on BBC, especially the series featuring David Tennant.  I’ve visited the official BBC Website, and I have to say that I am frustrated by it. There are lots of great features, such as a comic maker and video extras. Yet they are not available to anyone accessing the internet from outside the UK. I understand that international audiences are a few weeks behind the UK when it comes to airing episodes, so there is a fear of giving away plot details.  But once an entire series has aired in a particular country, shouldn’t the restrictions be lifted in that country?

Dr. Who is shown in North America via the Sci-Fi channel. Their official website is nicely designed, but only features basic information about the show.
